The Hollywood Reporter recently broke news of the "Buckwild" cancellation, with a source for the tabloid explaining that MTV hopes to avoid more controversy:
"After several days spent weighing the implications of moving forward with the reality show, MTV brass ultimately decided it would be imprudent to do so. The move - a bid to avoid any potential controversy as well as a recognition that Gandee was the show's breakout star - comes after a heavily hyped and ultimately successful first season."
After averaging approximately three million viewers per episode, MTV picked "Buckwild" up for another season in February 2013.
The alleged insider concludes with:
"...internal conversations were had on the day of Gandee's death about potentially 'softening' the show, which has focused on such behavior as off-roading, tire roll-downs and hard partying. But doing so likely would prove incongruous with the show's brand - and potentially turn off viewers in the process."
Gandee (21) tragically passed away on April 1 - his vehicle was found stuck in the mud while off-roading in West Virginia. The truck's tailpipe was submerged and Gandee (along with two other passengers including his 48-year-old uncle David Gandee) allegedly died of carbon monoxide poisoning.
Following news of the unfortunate deaths, MTV released this statement:
"We are shocked and saddened by the terrible news about Shain Gandee, and those involved in this tragic incident. We are waiting for more information but at this time, our main concern is for the Gandee family and their friends. Our thoughts and prayers are with them. Shain had a magnetic personality, with a passion for life that touched everyone he met and we will miss him dearly."
"Buckwild" was cancelled just eight days later.
Here are some fan and cast member reactions:
@MadChad412: "Buckwild got canceled. I'm sure MTV will find some more morons to put on their terrible programming for the mindless sheep."
@TeamTinaBGC: "I understand why MTV canceld Buckwild's season two even though it saddens me :( I wish the cast the best in life."
Meanwhile, the show's producer JP Williams is apparently outraged over the cancellation. He told The Hollywood Reporter:
“This is the network that has shows about teen pregnancy. They’ll stick by a show that allows you to abandon a child, but a kid dies by accident doing what he does for a living [mudding] and they cancel the show?“There’s something that smells of sh#t here on every level."
But Williams insists that he'll fight to get the "redneck" version of the "Jersey Shore" back - "My job is to protect these kids... This will get ugly."
