John Mayer just released his new single on Tuesday but fans and analysts alike are already suggesting that the song is a response to Taylor Swift's 2010 song "Dear John."

"Paper Doll," a ballad-style track featuring soft guitar playing from Mayer, seems to have several references to Swift's past work, including "Dear John," the song that Swift wrote in reference to her perceived mistreatment by Mayer when the pair was dating (Swift has never confirmed that the song is about Mayer, but come on. Be serious).
For example: One line from Mayer's track states the subject of "Paper Doll" is "like 22 girls in one/And none of them know what they're running from." The line works on two levels. "22 girls" is potentially a reference to the single "22" from Swift's newest album "Red." The blurb about running could be a response to Swift's line from "Dear John" where the vocalist declares "I ignored when they said 'run as fast as you can.'"
Swift also sang "you paint me a blue sky and go back and turn it to rain," to which Mayer's response could be "Someone's gonna paint you another sky." Both songs also feature dresses as a theme, but many of Swift's tracks do.
Mayer didn't respond to calls for comment on the theory from MTV, but stated in the past that he felt "humiliated" when he heard "Dear John" for the first time. Swift has also refrained from comment for the time being, but "Dear John II" could be a possibility for her next album.
Both stars are doing just fine in the dating world since the split. Swift's spent a bit of time with One Direction's Harry Styles and Katy Perry told Vogue that she's still "madly in love with him (Mayer)." Maybe both artists should let sleeping dogs lie.
