According to his widow, Gina Schindler, she claims that his female boss, Sgt. Christine Hertzel forced the affair on the police officer that, "he could not escape". According to the New York Post, the lawsuit filed at the Queens Supreme Court states that the officer was, "made to understand that he would suffer tangible detriment in his job, job assignments, work conditions and future prospects if he did not submit to the sexual advances and demands...".
Schindler's widow is looking for unspecified damages for the forced affair that began March 2011 until his suicide with Sgt Hertzel. Officer Schindler tried to put an end to the relationship on February 13 and threatened to kill himself over the guilt. Now his widow is left raising her 5-year-old twins.
According to the lawsuit, Sgt. Hertzel refused to end the affair and told the police captain and the officer's threat of ending his own life, which the captain tried to prevent by calling Schindler.
The day the 14-year veteran's committed suicide, he texted his sergeant that he would no longer be seeing him. Friends described the officer as, "an all-around great guy".
