Caleb Moore, a championship snowmobiler, has died this morning after a terrible crash last week in Aspen,Colorado, at this season's Winter X-Games. After coming up short on a backflip attempt during a freestyle competition, the 25-year-old snowmobiler flew over his vehicles handlebars and landed face first in the snow. Immediately afterwards, his 450 pound snowmobile rolled over him. After a few tense minutes spent on the snow-covered ground, Caleb was helped off of the course and brought to a hospital for concussion treatment. His situation worsened with bleeding around his heart and brain trauma, so Moore was flown to a hospital in Grand Junction for surgery. After spending a week in the hospital, Caleb Moore passed away this morning.
Moore got his start in the extreme sports world with all terrain vehicles and soon moved on to snowmobiles. While living in Krum, Texas, Caleb honed his skills by using sleds and foam pits. He mastered the snowmobile and one of the sport's most difficult trick, the back flip, in a short amount of time. Caleb turned a lot of heads when he participated in the 2010 Winter X-Games and captured the bronze medal in the freestyle competition and placed 6th in the best trick competition. This first Winter X-Games appearance occurred after only a few months of training in actual snow. From there, he continued to collect championships and awards as he progressed in the sport, including more bronze and even a silver medal in the 2011 Winter X-Games best trick competition. Caleb also went back to racing all terrain vehicles, winning many trophies in this sport as well.
Caleb's younger brother, Colten, is also a snowmobiler and fellow champion, winning the gold medal at last season's Winter X-Games. The same night of Caleb's accident, the 23-year-old Colten experienced his own crash, resulting in separated pelvis. The Moore family has not released any details of Caleb's specific injuries. However, they have expressed their heartbreak over the whole incident.
Below this article is an embeded video of the brutal crash in question. As you can see, Caleb Moore was surely at the top of his game. Fellow snowmobilers considerd Caleb a fierce competitor who could do anything he put his mind to. The sport of snowmobiling is clearly a dangerous one, but it is also extremely graceful. The embedded video does show exactly what happened to Caleb Moore, so please view it at your own risk. This unfortunate tragedy is the first death in the Winter X-Games' 17-year history.
