Reports confirm that a 65-year-old woman and her 70-year-old male companion were swept out to sea on Tuesday (March 5) after a giant wave crashed into them during a relaxing stroll on the beautiful beaches of Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. The US tourists were promptly rescued by Navy personnel, but the vicious ocean blow killed the elderly female. The man currently remains in serious condition.

The two victims were not identified, but the AP reports that the woman had an ID from Wisconsin and the man had legal identification from Nebraska. It remains unknown if any living or next of kin had been notified. Apparently, the pair was taking a casual stroll on the beach on the way back to their luxury Pacific resort when they were suddenly dragged out to sea. Upon rescue, the woman was officially declared brain dead. The man remained in serious condition as of Wednesday.

The U.S. Embassy in Mexico says it has no information immediately available.

As the Inquisitr reports, several popular beaches on Cabo San Lucas are known for abnormally large waves. According to the book "100 Best Surf Spots in the World," some Cabo beaches harbor gentle, easy to ride waves while other locations are home to waves that are extremely huge and even dangerous:

"At the other end of the scale is the big surf of Cabo San Lucas at Todos Santos, where the wave can turn into huge gun barrels, glistening steel in the noonday sun and striking awe into the township that overlooks the bay. When a mighty swell hits, the big-wave riders get out their guns and face the pounding shorebreak eye to eye. It's a shoot-out with some of the most powerful waves in the world."
